(Our touring to places overseas is still on hold, passports confiscated, all related to Jimmy sneezing on a Qatari border agent’s vaccine card scanner. We only found out the cause yesterday.) Did we mention we were having fun with the east coast weather? On the eastern bank of the Hudson right in the middle of the Polar Vortex our driver refused to cross the Mario Cuomo bridge citing any contact with something Cuomo-ish would require the bus to be disinfected. An expensive and yucky notion indeed. So our alternate route stuck us in a three-day traffic jam on the George Washington Bridge. Eighteen feet deep it was and not all of it was snow. Thank God Original Ray's Pizza delivers. You know, Manhattan style, the kind ya stack and fold over with three fingers to capture the grease? Stu and Jimmy refuse to go near that deep dish glop that passes for Midwesterner pie. We ate only slices and drank only beers the whole time. Empty boxes tossed out the window (no one noticed the incremental trash BTW) forming westbound trail indicating, Hansel and Gretel-esque, the band’s slow yet consistent progress to the Garden State. Yup. The idiot savant Governor of New Jersey was pleased (he tweeted it, go check! )we couldn't set up our amps and bring any more noisy attention to the woes of Fort Lee locals. Seizing the advantage, we asked for Jets tix reminding him Stu grew up in Jersey and he said, forgedda-bowdit. Hey, we tried.

Now we're back in the horrid Arizona weather (You call this weather?) It's going to kill us, but we'll come out for a rockin’ raucous night at The Roadhouse in Cave Creek. In 3 weeks. The 28th. Friday. No snow…we promise.
The Painted Cave Bandtag:www.thepaintedcaveband.com,2005:Post/68318082021-12-06T13:11:58-07:002023-12-10T12:12:21-07:00We spy on Santa and the elves at Santa's Workshop.
We recently snuck up to the North Pole to see Santa's Workshop in action. We have lobbied to be on the 'good musicians' list' but judging by Jimmy's reaction, the elves were not making any drum-sets. Looks like he'll be banging two pieces of coal together at the next gig.
The Painted Cave Bandtag:www.thepaintedcaveband.com,2005:Post/66140982021-04-26T09:51:00-07:002023-12-10T10:18:32-07:00Gig on the Horizon ...May 7th Janey's
On a warm desert highway. Cool wind in my hair. The warm smell of colitas, rising up through the air. Up ahead in the distance, I saw a shimmering light.
Now, we're inclined to wax lyrical about our short hop by jet aeroplane from Dhubai to Sharm-el-Sheik last month. Airborne we were made very nervous when we were shadowed first by a MIG-29 bearing an insignia we never could figure out; then by an F-16 with a Saudi device upon her fuselage. Nervous is right.

Next, after landing in Egypt, we found that our (mis)management company's (Kablooie, Inc.) logistics department was probably celebrating Arizona's legalizing marijuana by smoking up a great whopping fog at the office and forgetting to book us a hotel. So, we told our cabby to go straight to the venue. He wasn't happy with our directions and it was clear why when we arrived. One giant span of featureless sand dune. Great, no hotel and no venue.

Crazy thing. Up drives a very excitable Egyptian who spoke only as much English as he could learn from watching re-runs of Jersey Shore. We were pretty steamed (this "virtual venue" problem having happened to us before). The Egyptian, actually a pretty nice bloke named, Achmed, told us to "cool our jets." The venue would be there.

Over the next four hours about a thousand trucks and donkey carts cycled through a make-shift circuit. First they laid down a metal mesh roadway, next came a giant tent. About two acres of parquet made a decent floor, next a stage. Electricity came on a trailer with, of all things, a fuel cell generator. Why, the darned things will generate 1.12 gigawatts in complete (well, almost complete) silence. The tent was sealed off, the air inside cooled to 73 degrees Fahrenheit. By sundown people in Hollywood premier formal-wear started to show up. We played a great gig. The crowd had a great time.

The hotel problem was solved by our staying at the venue. We had a great time, great food, (great booze, too, but don't tell Abdel Fattah el-Sisi or the Muslim Brotherhood). Achmed brought in some camp beds and sleeping bags. (His family descended on the place and ate every bit of left-over food.) Ha! I don't think even the Stones can beat that!
The Painted Cave Bandtag:www.thepaintedcaveband.com,2005:Post/65166402021-01-08T14:44:10-07:002023-12-10T09:44:46-07:00Gig Alert!
We're in the bus finishing up our Eastern European tour when Bill insisted upon finding a special set of jazz strings craving 'steel overtones with capitalist melodic intonation' he once heard on Radio Free Europe while Parisian tub soaking somewhere on the Left Bank. Having heard this Jim Morrison-esque request before, and knowing he just had to pee and was too embarrassed to vocalize a requested stop, Greg and Jimmy palmed our 'here we go again' wave to the driver.

Sensing urgency, Vald (our bus driver) dutifully found a Russian-pub looking place in the basement of one of those dreary Soviet era vertical ice cube trays of an apartment building whose black and white photographs are often seen displayed at ill-attended urban gallery shows. So we filed in, figuring why miss an opportunity to douse our vocal cords with some local vodka. The PCB dummies? Whoa not us. After all, Vlad was driving.

Well somebody spilled the goulash, tipping off the crowd that the rock band who performed last night's full house gig just a few kilometers back, had indeed entered the premises.

In no time there were repeated chants of "Ve lovf da Pianted Cooov Bahhnd!" "You boys vill leev weeth us now!", voiced a pack of swarthy uni-browed locals threatening us with screwdrivers. Lucky for us they were of the liquid not the tool type. Wishing to avert an international crisis we obliged and knocked back countless gratis drinks toasting everything from cheap European guitars to Trump's hairstyle to Putin's shirtless horsey rides. All while avoiding the inevitability of our not staying long enough to see what livestock they might gift us.

The afternoon wore on and somewhere amidst the crowd rendering an a capella interpretation of "Back In The USSR" blended with "The Macarena"...we found our moment to invisibly and quickly tumble out the back door and into our bus, greeted by Vlad's nervous revving. We hit the Russian road post haste.

By the time our potential adoptive families knew we were gone there was nothing of The PCB but stale diesel fumes and fresh Michelin tracks pointing to Gdansk.

We did manage to make the next gig with empty bladders, bellies full of local swill, and wallets intact. ......Alas, Bill never did score any strings.
The Painted Cave Bandtag:www.thepaintedcaveband.com,2005:Post/62501842020-03-15T10:05:02-07:002023-12-14T10:17:01-07:00The PCB Rocks Bike Week 2020
See you at Outlaws Saturday April 4th at 2pm!
The Painted Cave Bandtag:www.thepaintedcaveband.com,2005:Post/61305092020-01-17T21:47:04-07:002023-12-10T11:45:03-07:00Gig Alert! We rocked the rooftop of Outlaws in Cave Creek AZ all afternoon to the twirling dance-delight of cowboys and biker chicks...rockers and yuppies. Nope, no Savile Row suits or old hippies this time. Just real people of all adult ages from this great southwest backyard playground of ours. The execs from our micro-management company (read: dour-faced bean counter types in buffed wingtips), Kablooie Management were shall we say...pleased? The band was enthusiastically invited back by the Outlaws' owner (the 'best bucking bar' BTW) and we had 'em dancing and partying their way to sugar plum land with visions of live local rock and roll fun in their heads. Needless to say, we thanked everyone on behalf of ourselves and the band and yes Virginia, we passed the audition.
The Painted Cave Band
